In this Zeus III slot review I’m going to be giving you an impartial, in-depth and comprehensive look at what this timeless game has to offer – and what you can expect when playing it for yourself.

Zeus III is a video slot from WMS, although today, you’ll see it pushed out via SG Gaming’s digital content aggregation platform, as SG Gaming now own WMS in full. It’s one of the most well-known and well-respected online video slots in history, and is, of course, based around Ancient Greek Mythology.

Expect dramatic music, big win win-potential and nail-biting bonuses as you battle it out against Zeus to try and take down a significant win in the base-game and bonus!

Zeus III offers one of the most unique-looking layouts you’re likely to come across in an online video slot. The game has 6 reels – which is by no means strange for today’s “Megaways” day and age – but the height of each reel is different; the far left-most reel is just two symbols high, while the second reel in is three symbols high, the fourth reel in is four symbols high and so on.

The game offers a generous RTP of 96.1%, and you can play the slot from as little as 50p per spin. The game also has 192 paylines, so while it’s not quite a “win-any-way” slot, it’s not far off.

How To Play Zeus III Slot

Zeus III slot is relatively easy to play, and the first thing you’ll want to do is select your bet size. This is done in the bottom left-hand-corner of the screen, and you’ll see a number of different stake options available to you.

Simply browse through the bet amounts on offer, choose the one most suited to your budget and press the big “Spin” button on the right-hand-side of the screen to get started!

WMS have also recently brought back their well-missed autoplay function, so it’s now possible to set Zeus III to play out up to 100 spins (or 1000 for those outside of the UK) automatically. This allows you to sit back and enjoy watching the action unfold without having to worry about manually clicking the mouse on every spin!

Symbols and Payouts

Just like we’ve seen WMS do in their previous Zeus-inspired slots, Zeus III contains a plethora of theme-specific symbols and images, all of which are designed to make the playing experience as realistic and immersive as possible.

Zeus III slot paytable

Like most game developers today, WMS have opted to use playing suit icons as the game’s lower-paying symbols; this includes hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. The payouts for a 6-of-a-kind win isn’t amazing, but you’ve got to remember that with 192 paylines it all adds up, and a full screen of spades – the worst symbol in the game – is still going to pay out at around 250X your total stake.

The game’s mid and higher-paying symbols are all theme-specific, and you’ll see these premium symbols stacked across all reels. These higher-paying symbols include Pegasus, a Greek Ship, a Warrior’s Helmet, a Vase, and a Coin. Zeus himself is a paying symbol (although during the bonus round he transforms into a wild symbol), and the wild during the base-game is a Greek Temple.

There’s also scatter symbols present on reels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, and these take the form of a God’s fist striking through a bolt of thunder. I’ll tell you more about these scatter symbols in the following section as they’re quite important to triggering the game’s main bonus round!

Bonus Features

Zeus III slot is really all about the bonuses and features – although you definitely don’t need to trigger the main bonus in order to walk away with some pretty significant-sized wins! Below, I’m going to be running you through the two bonuses; first, we’ll start off with the base-game feature, and we’ll then be taking a look at the main bonus round.

Zeus III slot features

Expanding Zeus Wilds

During the base-game, if you manage to land a full stack of the Zeus symbol on any of the slot’s reels it will become wild and substitute for all other symbols, aside from the scatter symbols.

It’s pretty common for the first few reels to land fully stacked which gives you a great start; if you’re lucky enough to make it all away across the screen with one symbol you’re guaranteed a fairly decent payout, especially if it’s one of the higher-paying symbols!

Free Spins

The main bonus in Zeus III slot is a free-spins bonus round, and it’s triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so will award you with 10, 25 or 50 free-spins respectively. You will then be taken to a new set of reels, which “flip” around.

This means the reels with the highest number of rows are now positioned on the left-hand-side of the screen instead of the far right-hand-side. Not only does this make it significantly easier to form wins, but it makes for a completely different type of game.

Another major perk of the free-spins bonus is that you no longer need to land the Zeus symbol fully stacked in order for him to become wild. Landing Zeus on any reel will see him automatically expand and fill that entire reel – acting as a wild symbol – regardless of how much of him is shown on the screen, and this is why it is, theoretically, possible to land a full screen of wilds for a monster win!

It’s also possible to re-trigger the feature, done by landing another 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Do so and you’ll again be awarded 10, 25 or 50 free-spins respectively.

Jackpot and How To Win

You’ll probably have picked up, by now, on the fact that I’m very firm you don’t need to land the bonus round in the Zeus III slot game in order to hit big wins. In fact, in my time as a slot player I’d estimate I’ve had around 150-200 bonuses on Zeus III in total – and of those 200-odd bonuses, only a handful have paid over 100X my stake.

Zeus III slot big win

However, I’ve had some monster wins on the game – and they’ve almost all happened during the base-game. It really does like to throw in 200-300X wins, and if I’m completely honest with you, the symbol is virtually irrelevant; if you manage to make it all the way cross with even the lowest-paying symbol you’re going to be walking away with a big win, and a few stacked wild reels is going to see the size of these wins increasing exponentially.

When it comes to improving your chances of winning, Zeus III is one of those games where I strongly recommend you consider giving it a good few hundred spins. You really are relying on a (relatively rare) high-paying bonus round or a decent base-game hit, and it’s not uncommon to go 10-15 spins without a single win, so to improve your chances of winning I’d recommend sticking the game out and giving it a fair chance.

Software

Zeus III slot logo If I’m being totally honest, SG Gaming/WMS may be the first game developer in history who actually made their games worse after porting them over to HTML5. Zeus III slot is still perfectly playable – and it is, of course, now fully mobile-optimized, so you can enjoy playing the game from all your mobile devices including Android, iPhone and tablets.

However, the HTML5 version of the slot feels a lot more clunky than the Flash-based version. Things like slam stopping the reels are now not possible, and while I’m sure the math side of the game hasn’t changed it does feel as though the game delivers fewer wins during the base-game. However, I should point out I have absolutely no proof of that being the case and it’s purely personal speculation.

The one thing I will say if you’re planning on playing from a mobile device is that I’d advise making use of the autoplay facility. It can get pretty tedious to manually spin the button every spin, especially when the game rounds can take 5 seconds+ to complete, so while the HTML5 version of Zeus III isn’t a complete and utter disaster I feel that – like Raging Rhino – WMS/SG Gaming could have done a much better job in porting the game over for mobile play.

Summary

Zeus III is one of the world’s most successful video slots ever released – and that’s no exaggeration.

Aside from it being one of my favourite games, it continues to prove itself to be one of the most played games, especially on the land-based market. And with so many spin-offs it’s not hard to see why WMS and SG Gaming have chosen to “port” it over to HTML5 for mobile play.

One of the things I like most about the game is that you don’t have to wait for the bonus round in order to land big wins; the base-game is more than capable of producing 2-300X+ hits!
