Aztec Gold Megaways is a brand new video slot from iSoftBet, and it’s the first of theirs to feature Big Time Gaming’s patented Megaways mechanic.

With up to 117,649-ways-to-win on each spin the game packs a huge amount of win-potential – and it’s playable from as little as 20p per spin and as much as £20. The game is built around a 6-reel format with between 2 and 7 rows on each spin.

As you can probably tell from the name, the game’s themed around an Aztec theme, and you’ll see relevant symbols, graphics – and an audio soundtrack accompanying each and every spin.

When I was writing my review of the game I was happy to find that it runs incredibly smoothly – and I’m going to talk more about the mobile gaming experience in this Aztec Gold Megaways review too, as I feel it’s worth a special mention. Let’s kick off with a look at how to play.

How To Play

Like all of iSoftBet’s video slots, Aztec Gold Megaways is built around their standard HTML5 layout. That means it’ll look and play great whether you download a casino app, or choose instant play on your phone’s web browser.

Directly in the centre of the screen you’ll notice a green button – this is the main “spin” button, and pressing this will activate the next game. To the right-hand-side of this button you’ll see the “Coin Value” button. This allows you to select your total bet size – and clicking it will open up a breakdown of all of the different stake options available to you.

You’ll also see a small circular button next to the spin button too. This is known as the autoplay feature, and it allows you to pre-program up to 100 spins to play-out automatically. I frequently use autoplay when playing video slots, as it saves me from having to manually click the spin button each time I want to play a round.

There’s also a “Pay Table” button; this brings up more information about the game, shows you the symbols and payouts (which I’ll cover in the following section) and allows you to read more in-depth game rules. It also tells you all about the bonuses and features which, again, I’ll cover later in this review.

Symbols and Payouts

Like virtually all Megaways slots today, Aztec Gold utilizes playing card values, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace – along with the addition of a 9. These symbols don’t pay much, but they can be worth a fair bit if you’re lucky enough to match stacks across all 6 reels.

Aztec Gold Megaways payouts

The higher-paying symbols are all theme-specific, and include a variety of Aztec creatures and Gods. The top-paying symbol is the Pink God symbol, and matching a 6-of-a-kind combo of him awards 50X your stake – match up multiple lines on a single spin and it’s not hard to see where the game’s real win-potential lies!

Bonus Features

Aztec Gold Megaways has quite a lot going for it – and I’m going to be giving you a rundown of all the bonuses and features in the following section. I’ll start things off with a look at the Megaways mechanic and how it actually works.

Aztec Gold Megaways bonus features

Megaways Game Engine

Big Time Gaming – an Australian game developer – created their unique Megaways game mechanic which has since changed the world of online gambling forever.

Megaways means there isn’t a set number of paylines on each spin – the height of the rows varies, and the more symbols on each reel, the more Megaways there are – it’s possible for there to be up to 117,649-ways-to-win on most Megaways slots!

Cascading Reactions

During the base-game, if you manage to form a win you’ll notice that the symbols involved with the win disappear. New symbols then drop into their place – this is called a “reaction”. These reactions continue for as long as wins are formed – so, essentially, it’s possible for you to keep winning indefinitely from a single spin.

Aztec Gold Cash Respins

While it’s possible to hit some pretty big wins during the base-game, I think it’s fair to say the vast majority of Aztec Gold Megaways’ appeal lies within the bonus round. This is triggered by landing five or more of the Sun Disc scatter symbols anywhere in view during the base-game – they don’t need to be on an active payline, just anywhere in view will do.

You will then trigger the feature, and the number of Megaways that were present on the triggering spin will then lock in place. You are then awarded with 3 re-spins, and cash values then spin on the screen. Landing any cash value in view will reset your re-spin counter to three, and this continues for as long as you manage to land them in view.

Now, what I like most about this bonus round is that if you manage to fill an entire reel with these cash values you’ll also activate the multiplier for that reel – it’s possible for this multiplier to be worth 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, 6X or 7X dependant on the number of Megaways present.

There are also three different progressive jackpots – the Mini, Major and Mega. These are worth 30X, 100X and 1,000X your stake respectively – and they too can be multiplied by up to 7X, so there’s some tremendous win-potential to be found here!

Jackpot and How To Win

Aztec Gold Megaways comes with a maximum payout worth up to 19,200X your total stake. If I’m honest, I was actually surprised to see a cap – many Megaways slots don’t have caps, so this was somewhat of a surprise. However, I think you’d be hard-pushed to find any players complaining about winning almost 20,000X their stake!

As I talked about earlier, the game’s main win-potential lies within the bonus round. What you’ll really want to be keeping an eye on is the jackpot amounts – the Mega, in particular. This alone is worth 1,000X your stake – and if you’re able to land it on a reel with 7 rows and fill up that entire reel – you’ll win a payout of 7,000X your stake.

My guess is that it’s simply not possible to land more than one of each jackpot amount – while iSoftBet don’t publicly state this to be the case, it seems likely that that’s how you can win the 19,200X jackpot.

If you’re looking to improve your chances of winning while playing Aztec Gold Megaways – have patience. It’s a volatile game and this means the bonus doesn’t come around all that often. It is, after all, the bonus round where you’ll find yourself making most of your profit – so it’s worth sticking around for a couple of hundred spins and seeing what happens!

Software

Aztec Gold Megaways While iSoftbet have been around for quite some time, their games haven’t really “caught on” in a mainstream fashion until a few years ago.

Before this, they were largely seen as a small, insignificant game studio who hadn’t really amounted to much. Now, the reason I’m telling you this is because things have changed recently. Today, iSoftbet’s user interface looks great, is easy-to-navigate and easy-to-use.

The game is also developed for both desktop computer/laptops and mobile devices – and this is thanks to the HTML5 build of the games. What this essentially means is that you don’t need to download or install a slots app or any other pieces of software to begin playing. Simply pull out your mobile device, tilt it into landscape mode, select your stake – and you’ll be able to begin playing in just a matter of seconds!

While I was putting this review of Aztec Gold Megaways together, I spent time trying the game out from my mobile device (an Android S10+.) Granted, it’s a good phone – but the game ran incredibly smoothly, and I honestly couldn’t fault it – iSoftBet have done a great job making sure it’s fully mobile-optimized!

Summary

If you’ve been involved in playing video slots in any way, shape or form over the past couple of years you’ll probably have seen the term Megaways thrown around more than you could shake a stick at. It seems almost every game developer is now either licensing the mechanic from Big Time Gaming or developing their own alternative – and iSoftBet are the latest to use the technology.

Compare the Best Mobile Slots Apps

Despite it being a bit “overdone”, I think it’s fair to say iSoftBet have done an excellent job with Aztec Gold Megaways. The game runs fantastically, there’s some massive win-potential (almost 20,000X your stake) and there’s decent potential in the base-game too, especially if you manage to land a full 117,649-ways-to-win screen.

It’s also a great game to play from your mobile device – the software provider has done an excellent job, and I couldn’t recommend the game highly enough.
