Achilles Deluxe is a new real money video slot from Realtime Gaming, and this great-looking game is inspired by Greek Mythology – themed around the well-known Trojan War. Achilles Deluxe is built around a 5-reel, 3-row format, and, like many of the software provider’s games there’s two progressive jackpots to look out for.

Achilles Deluxe has an RTP of 95.70%, so this is a little lower than I’d like to see – but for Realtime Gaming it’s actually somewhat decent, and it’s definitely not the worst return to player percentage I’ve seen.

In this Achilles Deluxe slot review I’m going to be giving you my honest and impartial thoughts about the slot – what you can expect when playing it for yourself, what bonuses and features are built in (and how they work), and I’ll show you how to play, how it renders on mobile devices and more! Let’s kick things off with a look at how to actually play Achilles Deluxe.

How To Play

Like the vast majority of Realtime Gaming’s new video slots, Achilles Deluxe utilises the software provider’s new HTML5-based layout, ensuring smooth, easy and hassle-free gameplay. When it comes to actually playing Achilles Deluxe, the first thing you’ll need to do is select the amount of money you want to stake per spin. This is achieved by using the plus and minus button either side of the spin button in order to select your desired stake amount. Once you’re happy with your stake size, it’s simply a case of hitting the spin button, and you’ll then be able to enjoy the next spin!

Like all video slots today, Achilles Deluxe offers you a few in-game options too, and this includes an autoplay function (allowing you to set up to 100 spins to play out automatically), a quickspin mode (decreasing the amount of time it takes between spins), and there’s also a detailed paytable, game rules and more.

Symbols and Payouts

Like most of Realtime Gaming’s slots, Achilles Deluxe utilises Royals to represent the lower-paying symbols; these include playing card values, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace. However, the software provider has also added one additional Royal symbol – the 9 – into the mix. As you can probably imagine, this is the game’s lowest-value symbol, and I’ll be honest – it pays really poorly. Still, it does award a win for forming just a 2-of-a-kind combo, so it’s not all bad news.

Thankfully, the higher-paying symbols in Achilles Deluxe offer significantly more win-potential – and they’re also all theme-specific. They include Achilles, Hector, Paris, and Queen Helen of Sparta.

To be fair to Realtime Gaming, it’s clear they’ve worked pretty hard on the graphics side of things here – and while I think they have drawn quite a bit of inspiration from the classic Hollywood film Troy, they’ve done a good job – and all of the symbols (even the Royals) fit in nicely with the slot’s theme, background and overall presentation.

Bonus Features

There’s a ton going on in Achilles Deluxe – and below, I’m going to break down the various bonuses and features you’ll find inside the game.

Wild Feature

During the base-game, you’ll notice that there are Shield symbols on the reels – these are the game’s wilds, however, they don’t act just as substituting symbols. During bonus rounds, they also act as scatter symbols – so, they can be used in conjunction with the scatter symbols in order to trigger the other bonuses and features inside Achilles Deluxe, details of which we’ll look at in just a moment.

Free Spins

Landing 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels will automatically trigger 10 free games. This bonus can be re-triggered within the free games round, during which Wild also substitutes for the Scatter symbol.

This means you can potentially get infinite free games. Whilst this is unlikely, it’s actually not unusual to end up with 50 or 60 free spins from this feature, and that’s when the returns can really start adding up.

Shields Wild Free Spins

The Shields Wild free-spins bonus round is the main attraction within Achilles Deluxe, and it’s where you can win the non-jackpot jackpot of 2,000X your stake. In order to trigger the feature, you’ll need to land 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so will award you with 15, 20 and 25 free spins respectively. Now, before the free-spins bonus begins you’ll be given the choice to choose from one of three different free spin “modes”.

The fewer spins you choose, the higher the multiplier is for the duration of the bonus round – and this multiplier is then applied against all wins during the bonus. For example, the highest multiplier is 3X – and if you choose this free spins option, you stand the best chance at winning big – albeit with a lower number of spins. It’s a cool little bonus, as it, essentially, allows you to choose the volatility of the bonus round for yourself.

I should also point out that regardless of which free spins bonus you choose, it’s also possible to re-trigger more free spins. This is achieved by landing another 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, and you will then receive a number of free spins – the exact number depends on which of the bonus options you’ve chosen.

Jackpot and How To Win

While the maximum win in Achilles Deluxe is, arguably, lower than many of the video slots we’re seeing today (you can win up to 2,000X your stake on a single spin), I do feel as though hitting the max win is actually possible – something, I’m sure, all slot players can relate to.

But you can still get some decent returns, especially when you re-trigger the free spins during the bonus round.

Big Win on Achilles Deluxe slot

I should point out that this 2,000X jackpot is one of the game’s localised jackpots; there are two of them, both displayed above the reels, and, like with virtually all of Realtime Gaming’s slots, these jackpots are simply awarded randomly during the base-game. The higher you stake, the better your chances of winning the jackpots – so just bear this in mind.

Progressive Jackpot

Either of the Progressive Jackpots (Major, Minor or both) can be randomly triggered during the base game. If you win either or both jackpots, a banner will display your total jackpot winnings. These will be added to your winnings from the base game.

Software

Achilles Deluxe slot logo When I first started playing Achilles Deluxe, for the purpose of putting together this review, I’ll be honest – I was a little skeptical about how well the game would play on mobile devices. Realtime Gaming aren’t particularly well-known for building mobile-friendly games, and a lot of their old games run really badly on mobile devices.

Thankfully, due to some development changes – and the fact they now use HTML5 across the board – the mobile gaming experience while playing the software provider’s slots has improved dramatically, and I found this lending itself true to Achilles Deluxe.

I put a few hundred spins through the slot from my mobile devices while writing this review, and while I did experience some lag from time-to-time, on the whole, the game’s performance was excellent, and I simply can’t fault the game developer. They’ve clearly upped their games when it comes to building slots that are mobile-optimized, and you’ll have no issues playing Achilles Deluxe across all of your mobile devices, provided you have a semi-reliable internet connection.

I should also point out that Achilles Deluxe runs really smoothly on desktop devices too – so, if you still like to play video slots from your computer or laptop, you won’t run into any issues, software-wise while playing Achilles Deluxe!

Summary

In my opinion, Achilles Deluxe is one of Realtime Gaming’s best slots out there right now. It takes a lot for me to say that – and I’ve factored a number of things into account – but when push comes to shove, I really think you’ll be hard-pressed to find a game that does what Achilles Deluxe does, with the class and elegance Realtime Gaming have managed to built into the slot.

My first impressions of the slot, ironically, were actually pretty poor. The reason I say this, is because it is a highly volatile slot. This meant that when I was putting this Achilles Deluxe slot review together – and when I was testing out the game – I experienced a number of “dead spins” – so many, in fact, that I was unsure just how volatile the game really was. However, I ended up giving it more than 400 spins – and after I “settled in”, I managed to hit some pretty nice wins – upwards of 200X, a couple of times.

I like the fact that the 2,000X jackpot seems achievable; all too often I see software providers building unrealistic jackpots into their slots, and you know that – realistically – the chances of hitting it are about the same as winning the lottery. With Achilles Deluxe, it feels like hitting the jackpot is actually attainable – and if you do manage to trigger the Shield Wilds free-spins bonus round and go for the 15 free spins option (the most volatile of the three options available to you), it is possible you could find yourself hitting this jackpot.

The last thing I’d like to point out is that Achilles Deluxe differs from many of RTG’s games graphically. It looks really modern – and I think it’s fair to say the development/creative team at the game developer has worked incredibly hard to build a great-looking slot. Overall, Achilles Deluxe is a fantastic slot – and while it’s not perfect (the mobile gaming experience could be improved, for example), it’s a game well-worth checking out if you’re looking for something a bit different with decent win-potential!
