While reading through the football news this week, I came across a story about Spurs and England defender Eric Dier creating a new app.
I have to say I was pretty surprised. Now obviously I don’t know Eric personally, but just based on my perception of him from TV interviews etc, I have to be honest and say I didn’t think he was the type to get involved in app development.
Shame on me for my preconceptions right? Fair enough, I’ll accept that. You should never judge a book by its cover. But I have to say it did make me curious.
Why did he decide to create an app? What is it, what does it do, and is it any good? I decided to find out…
What’s The App Called?
Eric Dier’s new app is called Spotlas.
To be more accurate, it’s not just his. It was actually developed in partnership with his brother and Zoe Connick, a mutual friend.
So I’m not sure how much input Eric has had into the coding and testing. He might be more focussed on the product development and promotion side of things.
What Does The Spotlas App Do?
You’d be forgiven for thinking that a footballer would develop a football app. That was my first thought too, but you’d be wrong. There are already plenty of good football apps around of course, and we review the best ones right here. So perhaps sensibly, Dier has decided not to compete.
Instead, Spotlas is described as a “social networking app” which is not exactly a new concept either of course. But it’s a slightly different angle on what is already out there.
The point of Spotlas is for users to share their experiences and personal recommendations of the places they’ve visited. Think service industry locations such as bars, restaurants, cafes, cinemas – and yes even bookies and casinos – and you’re on the right track. The idea is to get personal recommendations from people you know trust. Like an offline version of our own casino reviews I guess.
I get the concept. You could argue that the giants like Facebook and Tripadvisor do this already, but maybe not in such a specific or targeted way. There could be an opening for something like this, if it is done very well and gets a lot of immediate traction.
Is It Any Good?
Well the man himself seems to think so! Dier is quoted as saying:
“To see the final product, have it on your phone and experience using it has been incredible.”
But we’ll have to wait a while before we can see for ourselves. As yet, it’s not available on either Google Play or App Store.
Whether it’ll be a hit or not might depend more on how well it’s marketed than whether it’s any good or not. Keep an eye on the reviews on both app marketplaces. But as always, look out for fakes, both good and bad. I’m not sure it’ll be getting 5 Stars from many Arsenal fans for example!
