What is a Blackjack in Blackjack?

what is a blackjack in blackjack

Blackjack is the name of the game itself, but it’s also the name of the best hand you can get in the game. If you’re new to card games, you might be wondering what is a blackjack, and what happens when you get one?

This quick guide will explain it all.

What is a Blackjack?

A blackjack is a hand that totals 21 points, consisting of an Ace and any card worth 10 points. This can include a 10 or any face card (J, Q, K).

To get a blackjack, you must be dealt a Ten and Ace in your first two cards. If you get a score of 21 after hitting or doubling, then this does not count.

What Does a Blackjack Pay Out?

The standard rules state that blackjack is the highest hand in the game and normally pays out at 3 to 2 odds, meaning you could win $150 on a $100 bet.

However, in some versions of blackjack (and at some less generous casinos), it might only pay our 6/5. Try to avoid these tables if you see one – as the blackjack payout makes a big difference to your RTP.

The blackjack payout should be clearly written on the table. If it’s not, always ask, and walk away if you’re told anything less than 3/2.

What Happens if Dealer and Player Both Get Blackjack?

dealer and player both have blackjack

If both you and the dealer have blackjack, the result is a “push” or tie, and your stake is returned.

What Happens if the Player Gets Blackjack and Dealer Gets 21?

A natural blackjack beats any other score of 21, so if this happens, you win!

What Happens if Dealer Gets Blackjack and Player Gets 21

If you have a score of 21 in 3 or more cards, and the dealer turns over a blackjack, then the dealer wins.

However, when playing at a casino, online, or on mobile, if the dealer is showing a 10 or Ace then (they will usually check for blackjack before the hand continues.

If they have one, (and you don’t) then you will lose your stake immediately. This avoids wasting time on playing a hand you can’t possibly win.

Can I Hit on Blackjack?

No – and you wouldn’t want to! You already have the best possible hand, so you won’t be offered any more cards.

Normally, unless the dealer also has a blackjack, you get paid out straight away, and then play passes to the next player on your left.
