Betfred Mobile Betting App Review

Betfred are one of the biggest names in online gambling, and they offer players an extensive range of products, including an online casino, a sportsbook, poker facilities, bingo and more. But are they any good, and can you trust them?

In this Betfred app review we’re going to be focusing on the Betfred mobile sports betting site, and the Betfred app.

Our Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)

Average, middle of the road sports betting app with a few positive and negative aspects. They are OK overall but there are other better apps out there for sure.

To help you decide whether Betfred mobile is right for you, I’m going to share the results of our testing. You’ll learn about how the app works on Android and iPhone, its key features, and how it compares to other similar apps on the market.

Key Features

Betfred is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. I find this to be a good thing, as it helps to ensure their bookmaker are adhering to the strict regulations that govern the UK’s online gambling industry. They also hold some other online gambling licenses which I’ll cover later on in this review.

Betfred have also been around a long time. They were first established in 1967, and acted as a bookmaker at various horse race and greyhound meetings throughout the UK. They then set up hundreds of betting shops up and down the country – many of which are still running today.

Website / App Design & Ease Of Use

The Betfred mobile website is pretty easy-to-use – although I noticed there is definitely room for improvement. When I first landed on their website, time after time I was sent to a landing page – displaying information about the bookie’s promotional offers. This is great – if you’re a new punter looking for the best sign-up bonus – but to be honest, I just wanted to get to the site and start looking around.

I also downloaded Betfred’s mobile app. The Betfred app is free to download and is available to all iOS and Android users. (A word of warning – if you’re an Android user, you may need to download the app directly from Betfred’s website as an APK file. This is due to Google’s confusing and ever-changing policy surrounding real-money gambling apps in their Play Store.)

The Betfred app is decent enough. It doesn’t particularly stand out in any way and doesn’t do anything special. However, it works well enough and didn’t particularly slow down any devices I tested it on. You can access most of the odds and features without too many hassles.

Software

Much of Betfred’s website, and the Betfred app, is powered by Playtech’s gaming software. In their online casino, they also feature games from some of the world’s largest game developers, including Microgaming, Pragmatic Play and NetEnt.

Choice of Betting Markets

Betfred offers a wide variety of betting markets. You’ll currently be able to place bets on American Football, Athletics, Aussie Rules Football, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, eSports, Football, Gaelic Football, Golf, Greyhound Racing, Handball, Horse Racing, Hurling, Ice Hockey, Lottery, Motor Sports, Pool, Rugby, Snooker, Tennis and UFC/MMA.

They also have a small selection of “novelty” bets, which includes a Politics section and a “Specials” section.
Generally speaking, Betfred’s odds are fair – they’re not the best in the world, but they’re certainly not the worst either. On the whole, they do a better job that many other bookmakers though.

Banking – Deposit/Withdrawal Options

Deposits & Withdrawals Betfred offers a wide variety of payment options. You’ll be able to deposit and withdraw using VISA, VISA Electron, MasterCard, Neteller, PayPal, Bank Transfer, Skrill, paysafecard, pingit, Maestro and Apple Pay. Betfred have also rolled out a novel scheme that allows you to top-up your online betting account by depositing cash in one of their land-based bookmakers. You can also withdraw cash from their shops, although their withdrawal limits are dependent on how much cash the shop currently has.

I was also pleased to find that Betfred don’t apply any fees to deposits or withdrawals. This means that the amount of money you fund your account with is the same amount you’ll be able to bet with.

With a withdrawal limit of up to £/$250,000 per day, there shouldn’t be any issues for you here. I also learned that if you choose to play in Betfred’s online casino – and end up winning one of their large jackpots – they are often happy to accommodate larger withdrawals. While this is done on a case-by-case basis it shows that the bookie isn’t looking to simply get out of paying large sums of money.

I should point out that if you’re accessing the Betfred mobile site from the UK there’s a strong chance you’ll need to undergo a verification check before you’re able to begin betting and/or withdrawing. Unfortunately, this is a legal requirement put in place by the UK Gambling Commission – Betfred don’t really have a choice. In some instances, however, they can carry out verification automatically using the Electoral Roll.

Safety and Security

security Betfred hold two main online gambling licenses. This includes one from the UK Gambling Commission and one from the Gibraltar Gambling Control Commission.

I was surprised to see them licensed in both jurisdictions – but a bit of digging uncovered why they have two licenses. Their business is physically located in Gibraltar – for tax purposes – and to operate an online gambling company out of Gibraltar, companies need a license from the Commissioner.

There is one specific action against Petfre (who own Betfred) on their UKGC license, which is a cause for some concern.

The Commission carried out an investigation into Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited which revealed the operator failed to carry out adequate source of funds checks on a customer who deposited £210,000, and lost £140,000, of stolen money in a 12-day period in November 2017. This indicated failings in the effectiveness of Petfre’s anti-money laundering policies and procedures.

Money laundering failures are never good, and this got them a £322,000 fine in 2019.

This isn’t anywhere near as big as the fine that some other more dodgy operators have had (eg Sky Bet, Unibet and Betway), which indicates that the offence wasn’t deemed to be as serious. But it’s still not particularly reassuring.

The investigation found that the operator breached licence condition 12.1.1 and a failure to act in accordance with ordinary code provision 2.1.2 of the LCCP.

When it comes to security, the Betfred mobile site does an decent job. They have an up-to-date SSL certificate which ensures your personal information and sensitive details are kept safe at all times.

Customer Service/Support

support I was surprised to see that Betfred actually offered support through post. This means you can send them snail mail with any problems you’re having, and they’ll respond to you back by letter. I should point out, however, that this is a very slow process, and you could end up waiting weeks to receive a response.

Betfred also offers live chat support, which allows you to contact their customer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The average wait time is just a couple of minutes, so you shouldn’t need to wait long to start receiving help and support.

If you prefer, you can also contact Betfred through phone and email. They provide a toll-free phone number to UK and Ireland residents, so you don’t need to worry about incurring any costs. If you choose to send the customer support an email, you should be prepared to wait between 24-48 hours to receive a response.

Currencies

The Betfred app offers a decent selection of currencies for you to bet in. These currently include AUD, CAD, DKK, EUR, GBP, ISK, JPY, MYR, NOK, NZD, SEK, SGD, THB, and USD.

Allowed Countries

Few countries are restricted from playing at Betfred. Reading their terms and conditions, I was only able to find restrictions for punters from the United States and Israel.

Betfred Mobile: The Final Say

If you’re happy with average, or if you have some specific loyalty to Betfred, then I guess the Betfred app may be for you. As I said at the start, there is nothing specifically wrong with it, but nothing really that good about it either.

However, if like me you feel that only the best will do, then I’d encourage you to check out some of our other app reviews to see if there’s another option that might fit your needs better than Betfred.
