Rules of Progressive Blackjack

progressive jackpot blackjack table

Progressive Blackjack isn’t a variation per se, so it doesn’t have its own specific ruleset.

Most online casinos follow the Classic Blackjack rules on their progressive tables.

What makes this version stand out is the progressive jackpot, which works in much the same was as it does with progressive slot games.

Every hand you play, a small side bet is placed, which is added to the jackpot. The side bet amount is usually an extra $1 per hand.

Usually, around 90c of the side bet is added directly to the pot. Now consider all those 90 cents being added every minute from every hand being played around the world, and you can soon see why the jackpot accumulates so quickly and reaches such huge numbers before it’s won.

The remaining 10c is added to the “seed” pot. This allows the next jackpot to start at $5,000 instead of zero, making it much more attractive for players to start trying to win it again.

How To Play Progressive Blackjack

Progressive Blackjack is available in multi-hand versions, meaning you can play between 1 and 5 hands simultaneously. For each hand, you place your chips on the table position as normal, and you’ll also have the option of whether or not to place the side bet.

I’d suggest you do, otherwise there’s not much point in playing this version!

When you’re ready, click the Deal button and the initial cards will be dealt. As I mentioned earlier, the main part of the game will usually just follow the standard Classic format, which you should be used to if you have played blackjack before. If not, this guide explains how to play for beginners.

How To Win The Jackpot

To win the entire jackpot, you need a hand that contains 4 Aces of the same suit.

Obviously, this doesn’t happen too often, but that’s the whole idea, right? Given that the game is played with either 6 or 8 decks, this isn’t impossible to achieve, and if you get lucky you’ll land the entire progressive jackpot.

The amount you’ll win obviously depends on how long it is since somebody won it last, but it can often be in excess of $100,000.

Progressive Blackjack Strategy

Unfortunately, there is no strategy that you can use to help you win the jackpot. Well not directly anyway. That’s down to the luck of the draw, as the decks are re-shuffled before every hand just as with any other type of online blackjack game.

But indirectly, a strategy will definitely help.

What you can do is use basic strategy to maximize your returns from your main bet. If you do that, your chips will last much longer, and this in turn will result in more hand being played.

Of course, the more hands you play, the more shots you get at landing the big win.

Another progressive blackjack strategy that some people like to use is to only start playing when the jackpot has built up to a certain level.

As I mentioned earlier, the pot starts at $5000 which is decent enough, and obviously, that’s much more than you could win in one hand with any other blackjack variation. But it’s not life-changing. For most people though, $20,000 or even $50,000 is life-changing.

So you could always let other players build up the pot, and then only get involved once the jackpot reaches a level you’re happy with. Obviously, you run the risk of missing out if somebody wins it before then, so you need to decide whether you’re happy being patient or you want to get involved straight away.

Who Should Play Progressive Blackjack

If you enjoy the gameplay, strategy and skill elements of blackjack, but prefer playing games that give you the opportunity to win bigger amounts, then progressive blackjack is perfect for you.

The main part of the game is the same or similar to many other variations, meaning you can use your strategy to mathematically give yourself the highest RTP of any online casino game.

Added to that, you have the side bet which gives you the chance of a huge payout.

Yes, of course, it’s going to cost a bit extra to make that side bet, and you’re not going to get regular returns from it, but that’s what makes the game so lucrative for the lucky player who wins the progressive pot.

Due to the nature of the game, you can’t usually play progressive blackjack in demo or free play mode, because doing so means you’re not able to make the contribution to the prize total.

Therefore, if you’re new to blackjack and want to practice first, I recommend you start off by playing another version first, where you can practice before you use real money. Then when you’re happy, you can always come back to the progressive version and go after that life-changing win.
